2004 Newport Harbor Raft-Up

Preparation for the event called for swabbing the decks and welcoming aboard any guests.

As other member boats left Huntington Harbour it came time to leave the sights of home and head to the open seas.
After a pleasant ride on smooth seas the boats arrived at the raft-up site and joined the early birds to form a SGYC raft of twelve boats.
There was time to visit with other members all up and down the raft.

The weather was warm enough to encourage many members to enjoy a dip in the cool water of Newport Harbor.
Around 4 p.m. the dinghys set out for the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club to pick up the members and guests who were unable to come by boat.
The bar was open and the pre-dinner snacks, prepared by Kathy Lee and friends, were enjoyed by all aboard.
As afternoon turned to evening it came time to move the festivities to the Bahia Corinthian YC for dinner.
Bob Axel's new boat, the Linda Si, provided transportation for those who arrived by dinghy earlier; while the rest of the members were ferried to the clubhouse in their dinghys.
There was plenty of time before dinner to meet and greet other members who came to enjoy the dinner with the rafters.
During a short program we were introduced to new members. Welcome aboard!!

There was also the presentation of the infamous Dumb Bell Award. It was a tribute to the seamanship of our member captains that we had to really work hard to come up with a reason to present it.
After a good night's sleep on the calm waters of the harbor we took one more lap around the raft-up to see it from all angles and headed back to the Bahia Corinthian YC to enjoy a delicious Sunday morning breakfast buffet.
Then it was homeward bound.

It is hard to imagine all the things that were fit into a short day and a half outing. It was like another world.
